Clinical Applications

  • Supports Healthy Gut Microbiome Balance
  • Promotes Digestive and Immune Health
  • Helps Maintain Intestinal Integrity
  • Supports Healthy Bowel Function
  • Aids in Reducing Occasional Bloating and Gas

Ortho Biotic is a unique probiotic formula designed to deliver active organisms shown to promote healthy gut microflora, protect intestinal integrity, and boost immune function. Ortho Biotic includes a carefully assembled cast of probiotic organisms in a patented, acid-resistant capsule to ensure maximum survival and delivery to the intestinal tract.

Each capsule provides 20 billion CFU from seven clinically studied strains, including Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium lactis, and Saccharomyces boulardii.

Overview

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract contains trillions of microorganisms — collectively known as the gut microbiome — that play a central role in digestion, immune regulation, and overall health. A balanced microbiome supports the breakdown of food, the synthesis of key vitamins, and the maintenance of a healthy intestinal barrier. Disruptions to this balance, caused by poor diet, stress, antibiotic use, or illness, can compromise gut integrity and immune function.

Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host. Research has demonstrated that specific probiotic strains can help restore microbial balance, support the intestinal mucosal barrier, modulate immune responses, and reduce occasional GI discomfort such as bloating, gas, and irregular bowel function.

Ortho Biotic's multi-strain formula provides broad-spectrum coverage across the major probiotic genera — Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Saccharomyces — to support a comprehensive approach to gut and immune health. The inclusion of Saccharomyces boulardii, a beneficial yeast, provides additional support for intestinal health and resistance to disruption from antibiotic use or travel.

Benefits

Lactobacillus acidophilus

Lactobacillus acidophilus is one of the most extensively studied probiotic strains. It colonizes the small intestine and produces lactic acid, which helps maintain an acidic environment that inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria. L. acidophilus supports lactose digestion, enhances immune function by stimulating the production of secretory IgA, and helps maintain the integrity of the intestinal epithelial barrier. Clinical research has demonstrated its effectiveness in supporting healthy bowel function and reducing occasional GI discomfort.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus

Lactobacillus rhamnosus is among the most clinically researched probiotic strains, with a well-documented ability to adhere to intestinal epithelial cells and resist gastric acid and bile. It has been shown to support immune modulation by promoting regulatory T-cell activity and reducing inflammatory cytokine production. L. rhamnosus is particularly noted for its role in supporting gut barrier function and helping to maintain healthy bowel regularity.

Bifidobacterium lactis

Bifidobacterium lactis is a dominant species in the large intestine and plays a key role in fermenting dietary fiber, producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that nourish colonocytes and support a healthy colonic environment. SCFAs such as butyrate are critical for maintaining intestinal barrier integrity and modulating local immune responses. B. lactis has been shown in clinical studies to support immune cell activity, including natural killer (NK) cell function, and to improve markers of gut health.

Saccharomyces boulardii

Saccharomyces boulardii is a beneficial, non-pathogenic yeast that has been extensively studied for its role in supporting GI health. Unlike bacterial probiotics, S. boulardii is naturally resistant to antibiotics, making it particularly valuable for maintaining gut microbiome balance during antibiotic therapy. It supports intestinal barrier function, modulates immune signaling, and has been shown to help reduce the incidence and duration of antibiotic-associated GI disruption. S. boulardii also produces proteases that help neutralize bacterial toxins in the gut.

Lactobacillus plantarum

Lactobacillus plantarum is a versatile and highly adaptable probiotic strain found naturally in fermented foods. It is known for its strong ability to adhere to intestinal mucosa and compete with pathogenic organisms for colonization sites. L. plantarum supports the production of antimicrobial compounds, helps modulate inflammatory pathways, and has been shown to support healthy gut permeability. Research also highlights its role in supporting immune balance and reducing markers of intestinal inflammation.
